This region was under the control of the Magadha Empire, then it was a part of the Mauryan Empire under Ashoka the Great and later a part of the Gupta Empire. The district, located in the Chota Nagpur plateau region was previously inhabited by large communities of aboriginal village people mostly of Munda and Oraon races. The communities gradually succumbed to the pressure of the Nagbansi family who ruled the city for a long time as Nagbansi Rajas. They also succeeded in establishing control over vast tracts of uncultivated forest lands.
